Prior to 1940, the community had no central business district. The Red & White Store supplied meat and groceries at the corner of California and Fair Oaks Boulevard. There was a gas station at the triangle of Fair Oaks and Manzanita.

Another grocery store, Arrowhead, was on the southeast corner at Fair Oaks Boulevard and Palm Avenue. Dan Donovan operated a bar, restaurant and grocery store at Fair Oaks and Garfield. That was the sum total of commerce in Carmichael – 1940.

Carmichael, has grown to a population of 61,000 people. There are 12 elementary schools, 8 junior high schools, and two high schools (although none public). High school students in Carmichael attend several nearby schools in the San Juan Unified School District

The American River Bike Trail runs between the Sacramento River, and the American River – just north of downtown Sacramento. The trail is considered one of the longest paved purpose-built bike trails in the country.

American River College is a state-funded community college. With over 30,000 students, American River College is among the largest community colleges in the state, and is looked upon as a leader in innovative programs and services.
